The Montessori Method is a result of the experiences and discoveries of Dr. Maria Montessori (1870-1952). Upon graduation as the first woman medical doctor in Italy, Dr. Montessori became interested in the education and training of retarded children.
Dr. Montessori designed materials and techniques which allowed these children to learn and take state exams along with normal children. They passed exams at levels equal to normal children. She also realized that her system of education was suitable for normal children as well. Dr. Montessori started a school called Casa Dei Bambini in 1907 with a group of slum children. She discovered their remarkable, almost effortless ability to absorb knowledge from their surroundings. She found out that children teach themselves. Based on her Montessori philosophy, the system of education spread in many countries and is now considered the best system of education for children. In the United States, the Montessori system has thrived since 1957. |
